And after being immersed in this business for years, you get to know exactly who provides the absolute best Car Buying Research.
So, I’d like to present to you, the two finest sources of public research
and information available to help you buy a new car, van, truck or SUV.
These two sources are absolute Gems - They are fiercely independent and
neutral. There’s not even a whiff of outside influence or pressure on
either of these organizations.
I can’t say that about many of the other online and offline sources that you
can use and in the Automobile Business, that is very unique and
something you should take advantage of.
I do have a bit of advice before going any further - If you know what vehicles
you're going to consider, get a pen or pencil and write down the exact make,
model and trim levels you're interested in. When you begin the
"grunt work" of buying a car online, the advice I'm going to pass
along will allow you eliminate the "losers" and help you avoid
flushing $6,000 down the toilet

The first public source I recommend is Consumer Reports. This publication has been around forever and is very well known.
Yet, year-after-year, I've been amazed at the number of people I've spoken with that had not reviewed the valuable information they have to offer.
Consumer Reports makes it so simple – each year they publish their Automobile, Truck and SUV Review.
If the vehicle you’re considering is a “Recommended Choice”, that vehicle should be on your list. If it's not "Recommended", scratch it off your list - it's not a car, van, truck or SUV you want to spend any money on.
There are three ways to get the information that Consumer Reports offers - two you have to pay for....the other is free.
One, you can get a 1 year online subscription to Consumer Reports Car Buying Issue which includes the Auto Review. It's $26, and you're forced to get a full subscription. You decide if it's worth it.
Two, you can purchase just the Consumer Reports Car Buying Guide. It's a paperback (256 pages) and much more detailed than the online or magazine option. Yet oddly enough, Consumer Reports does not sell the Auto Guide on their Web Site. The Guide is sold only in Bookstores and Online.
I've seen it on sale for upwards of $20 at Bookstores. Don't spend that
much. Go to Amazonand get a brand new copy for less then $10, or a used copy for less than $6. If you're researching used cars, vans, trucks or suvs, Amazon also offers the Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide
. Brand new it's less than $10 - used for less than $4.
Or....you have the really cheap option – stop by your local Library and ask to see a copy of the yearly Consumer Reports Automobile Review (magazine) or the Auto Buying Guide (paperback). Just make photo copies of the reviews you're interested in. The cost - at most, a couple of bucks.
With vehicles costing a small fortune, do yourself a favor and review this info. It will save you from making a very, very expensive mistake.
The second source I highly recommend
is Edmunds Online Car Buying Guide. This organization has been in business for years and in 1996, were the first to move all of their valuable information online and make it available for free.
What they offer is some of the finest research and pricing information available anywhere. For instance, Edmunds will tell you:
• What vehicles are considered “Most Wanted” by the editors of Edmunds.
• What vehicles are considered “Most Wanted” by buyers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
• What others think. Read what current owners have to say about the vehicle you’re considering.
• The “Total Cost of Ownership” (TCOSM).
When first visiting Edmunds, just search the manufacturer that builds one of the vehicles you are interested in (if you get asked for your zip code, go ahead and enter it). They have research for every car, van, truck and suv sold in the U.S. - both new and used.
If it’s an "Editors Most Wanted”, you’ll see a small logo next to that vehicle saying so. The Logo looks like this:
![]()
The same with Consumers “Most Wanted”. If you see this logo, the vehicle has treated its owners and drivers very, very well. These are the only vehicles that should be on your list. This the logo you're looking for:
![]()
Next, you’ll want to review the "Online Car Forums" at Edmunds. It is by far the largest online forum dedicated to consumer opinions regarding their cars, trucks, vans and suvs. What you’ll find there is absolutely amazing.
You get to read what the owners of the vehicles you’re considering have to say. It can be highly enjoyable, sometimes funny and the best part - they don’t hold anything back.
And lastly, check out "Total Cost of Ownership" (TCOSM) at Edmunds. It's where you get to compare your choices side-by-side....and find out which of the car, van, truck or suv choices you have will cost $6,000 more than the others. It will be the smartest thing you do when researching and buying a car online.
When you've completed this research the only vehicles that should be on your list are those that have at least one, or better yet, two of the following:
A "Recommended Choice" by the Consumer Reports Car Buying Guide
An "Editors Most Wanted” or "Consumers Most Wanted" Rating on Edmunds Online Car Buying Guide.
The ultimate goal of using Consumer Reports and Edmunds is to end up with only two vehicle choices.
If you have three finalists after this Research Step, that’s okay. Just know that you’ll have to spend a little more time as you proceed through the research and selection process.
Remember to enjoy yourself, take your time, and don't throw your money away on a lousy car, truck, van or suv.
I do have an obligation to point out that not all Car Makers, Dealers, Salespeople, Insurance Companies and Banks are greedy or crooked. This site is dedicated to honest Companies and their Professional Employees who've grown weary of the ignorant and classless giving the automotive related industry a black eye......a black eye that I feel is very close to being permanent.
By using these new and used car guides, I hope to be able to help you find the Best Businesses, and the Professionals that represent them, with very little effort on your part and help you....
Save More Money and More Time Than You Ever Have Before.
It is also my hope that these Companies and the Professionals that represent them will have more business than they can handle - a reward they justly deserve.
