Until 2002 or so, eBay Motors was simply one gigantic garage sale. A majority of the items sold on eBay were used parts & accessories offered by Mom & Pop type operations.
Then....the Corporate World figured out that ebay was a perfect sales channel to move excess and discontinued inventory. That put eBay Motors front and center in the auto parts and accessories game.
Since that time, eBay Motors has continued to grow and now offers one of the largest online inventories of auto parts and accessories. In fact they sell a part or accessory ever 2 seconds, every day, 365 days a year.
I want you to remember though, that eBay is still set-up as a garage sale/auction type business. You have to be willing to spend a few minutes poking around and know exactly what you're looking for. Absolute phenomenal deals can be found by simply spending a few minutes online (if you're not an eBay Member, go here to register first).
Here's a bit of advice and other tips to use when shopping for parts & accessories on eBay.
- When you visit eBay Motors
and find the section you're looking for, make sure you use their "Search" function. For instance, if you're looking for Floor Mats for a 2001 Honda Civic, enter that in the search box - not just "floor mats". If you're not specific, you'll have to wade through thousands of listings.
- Make sure the individual or Company that's selling the product you want is from the U.S. or Canada. If you like to get what you pay for - stay away from anything overseas.
- Check the Sellers Feed-Back Rating - it's located on each products page - upper right. If it's not 97% or higher, stay away from the seller because they've had to many unsatisfied customers.
- If the seller wants cash only for their product - run for the hills. It's a huge red flag. Make sure the company or individual accepts either Credit Cards or uses Pay Pal.
- When checking on a particular auto part or accessory, make sure you check any shipping charges. Some sellers inflate the shipping charges tremendously to make more money of the sale. All applicable shipping charges are listed near the top of the page, and near the bottom.
- "Buy It Now" Option: Several years ago, eBay introduced the Buy It Now option. It simply allows you to purchase the part or accessory you want immediately which allows you to avoid the garage sale bid system. If you've done your homework, and the price (including shipping) will save you money, go ahead and use the "buy it now" option.
- And last but not least....if you plan on bidding for a part or accessory on eBay....don't bid on anything till right before the auction ends. It makes no sense to drive-up the bid price now - it only makes buying what you want more expensive. Note when the auction ends (it's on each search page and each individual product page) and just before it ends, check the current bids. If the bid range is acceptable, jump right in.
To help keep track of auction time frames, eBay can help. On the top of each products page, you'll see a link that says "Watch This Item". Click on that and you'll be taken to a page that has a link you can use to e-mail yourself a reminder - look for the the link that says "Receive and e-mail reminder". It's located on the upper-left side of the page. It's a fabulous way for you to jump right into the bidding at the last minute.
Take your time, poke around and save yourself some money the next time you want to purchase auto parts or accessories.
