Okay – you’ve purchased your new vehicle. I hope you were treated well and got a good deal.
Now what happens?
Well, the “paperwork trail” for your purchase will continue for the next few weeks. Here is brief description of how you go about getting permanent plates for the vehicle that's now sitting in your driveway.
The process detailed below will generally apply to every State in the U.S.
Dealers (and the Banks) do all the paperwork - you do not have to go to the DMV to get your permanent plates. And in most States, three weeks after you leased your new vehicle, your plates will be delivered to the Dealership you leased at. You’ll probably get a call telling you to come down and get them.
Each year, you simply get your registration updated – just as if you had regular License Plates.
If you have not gotten a call after about 3 weeks, give your salesperson a call to check on the status. If you wait and put that off, and something happens with the paperwork, you’ll be driving around on expired Temp Tags.
One more tip - if you have Vanity Plates and want to use them on the vehicle you leased, you are allowed to transfer them. The State will just charge you a bit more.
Again, the Dealer does all the paperwork. In this scenario, two things will happen depending on how your State handles Sales Tax.
In some States, the Sales Tax is collected as part of the transaction and the Dealer then pays the State on your behalf.
In other States, the Sales Tax is collected up front....and then you receive a check from the Dealer to go pay your Sales Tax at the local level.
The Check will be made out to both you and your State. You take both the Title and the Check over to your County Courthouse, have the Sheriff inspect the vehicle and get the Plates.
I know….it sounds like a waste of time. Yet they make the rules – we have to live with them.
Within three weeks of purchase, you should receive a small envelope from the Dealer.
In it, will be “The Memorandum of Title”. It’s a small, white “tissue-paper” like document. DO NOT THROW IT AWAY.
You need to take that document down to your local DMV Office (or County Courthouse) and get the permanent plates. If you toss it in the Garbage by mistake you’ll be entering the “Twilight Zone”. And it's horrible place - you don’t even want to hear about the process involved in getting a new Memorandum of Title.
If, within three weeks, you haven’t gotten the Memorandum of Title, make sure you call your salesperson immediately and have them look into it for you.
If it turns out that there will be a delay with your plates....don't worry about it. It's actually quite common to be driving around on an expired Temp Tag. Should you get pulled over by a Police Officer, just explain the situation to them and you'll be sent on your way.
Just remember to keep an eye out for the paperwork you need to arrive within 3 weeks....if it's not in your mailbox by then....pick up the phone and find out why.
