I purchased my first Truck in 1998 - a Dodge RAM 1500 4x4 (sorry Chevy and Ford fans - if you knew what I paid for it, you'd have bought it too).
I didn't buy new - I bought it used from a local firefighter that had bought it 8 months earlier. He really got in over his head with the monthly payment and needed out before it got repossessed.
As soon as I got home, I started to look for accessories to add to it. I wanted to put a bed-liner in it, a fiberglass cover, a couple of vent shades and side-steps.
I pulled out an old Truck Catalog I'd "borrowed" from a Dentists Office and paged through that. I didn't find much and actually thought most of the items were over-priced.
A couple of weeks later I visited a couple of truck specialty shops - same thing there - over-priced and almost everything I wanted was special order.
That's when I decided to poke around the Internet.
Now back in 1998, there wasn't a whole lot of online truck accessory sites. As a matter of fact, that weren't a whole lot of web sites period, back in 1998 - Google was still an infant, not the Goliath it is today.
After looking around a bit, I found JC Whitney - as it turns out, one of the first online car and truck accessory stores. I found what I wanted (except the cover) and was really satisfied with the prices. I ended up spending almost a $1000 - but damn, my truck looked good.
Since that time, I've spent close to $4000 on car and truck accessories and have referred friends, family and business acquaintances to the very best online stores in the U.S. where they've probably spent upwards of $50,000.
